Cajun
(ka-jun)
n. Chiefly Southern Louisiana & Mississippi.
1. A member of a group of people in southern Louisiana descended from French colonists exiled from Acadia in the 18th century.
2. A member of a group living in southern Alabama and southeast Mississippi, of mixed white, Black, and Native American ancestry.
Today, the Cajuns make up a significant portion of south Louisiana's population, and have exerted an enormous impact on the state's culture.
Contrary to the perception of much of the county, not all Louisiana natives are Cajuns. The Cajuns who settled in southern Louisiana originally did so in the area just west of what is now New Orleans, mainly along the Mississippi River. |

Later, they were moved by the Spanish colonial government to areas west and southwest of New Orleans, in a region later named Acadiana, where they shared the swamps and prairies with the Native American Indians.
